The Paul Breymann Drug Store was built in 1893. It is most ‘famous’ for being the stone building which stopped the ‘Schulenburg Great Fire’ in downtown Schulenburg on October 10, 1893. In the fire, twenty buildings were destroyed. The Paul Breymann Drug Store, of brick and stone, stopped the fire to the east of downtown saving numerous buildings. While it is not officially known, it is believed that that the old stove in the café at the rear of Senglemann’s Saloon was the cause. The coals were banked for the night, a stiff breeze of from 15 to 20 miles per hour blew up from the southeast just after dark and because the wooden building had cracks in the weather boards, the coats flared up, caught fire to a nearby stove wood and engulfed the building in flames. The fire got as far as the Paul Breymann Drug Store.
